Citizen Kane

Well I guess the film stunned you all in to silence! I'd like to hear your thoughts on the film...please consider the quotes below and leave some comments - cheers :-)

'Space becomes demonic, almost oppressive: shapes bend slightly at the edge of the screen, figures tower above us, and ceilings look unnaturally low, as if they were about to squash the characters...'

At what points of the film was this evident and why?

Also there is a 'duality of almost everything in Kane' - can any of you give examples where this is evident?

  1. I like the rosebud being the sleade and that to me, meaning his lost childhood. There was something about the film that didn't click with me, I would like to see a modern take on it. This might be because I am uesd to modern structured films. Thinking back to the film I do agree with the first quote, the ceilings did seem unaturally low. I think I would need more time to think why lol

  2. Just Been thinking lol Maybe the low ceilings mean the presure of kanes life always pressing down on him?

  3. This quote is true in terms of Kane's character because the low ceilings/ camera angles make him seem bigger which emphasises his dominant, significant presence throughout the film.

I also noticed that Kane was placed between characters a lot whilst they were talking. Even if they weren't directly talking about Kane he is still present within the scene which draws the audience's attention to him. Perhaps he was placed as a barrier to show conflicting opinions between characters?

  4. I didn't like this film at all. It felt like the scene's were put together from nowhere.
The ceiling lowered shows Kane as domineering, along with the many difficulties he faced.

  5. Hmm I enjoyed the film but there is soooo much to take in, this is definatly a film id have to watch a few times, seems to throw you off balance, It cannot really decide what genre it wants to be, its a detective movie, its a newsroom movie, its a romance, to name a few.
Kane's hard exterior and motivation seems to be driven by his resentment toward his gaurdian whom Kane views as the catalyst to his lost childhood. It is truly amazing how observant Welles was to the world around him. To take this story of lost childhood to eccentric tycoon and show the changes that moulded him.
To many that cannot relate to the film I would say take a step back and look at the comparisons to a modern day icon Michael Jackson, Like Kane, Jackson was robbed of his childhood at a young age and thrust into the limelight from a young age, as Kane resented his gaurdian, Jackson has mentioned resntment toward his father and again like Kane, Jackson went on to build his own xandu in the form of neverland, He also become an eccentric recluse and like Kane they both left a legacy that will live on and many questions unaswered.

  6. Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Interesting analogies and comparisons as well as interpretations! I think you all appreciate the film - even if you didn't like it all that much.
Brian you're right though, this film does need to be viewed a number of times, plus it gets so much more interesting as you delve deeper in to it. There's so much analysis we could get out of that film!
