Well what a weepie! ;-) Hope you enjoyed/ appreciated this classic film...

In preparation for Monday's lesson think about how you could apply the following to the film...

1. basic structure of enigma/resolution or equilibrium/disequilibrium/equilibrium
2. linearity + cause/effect logic
3. high degree of narrative closure
4. psychologically rounded characters as active narrative agents
5. spatial & temporal verisimilitude/realism

Citizen Kane

Well I guess the film stunned you all in to silence! I'd like to hear your thoughts on the film...please consider the quotes below and leave some comments - cheers :-)

'Space becomes demonic, almost oppressive: shapes bend slightly at the edge of the screen, figures tower above us, and ceilings look unnaturally low, as if they were about to squash the characters...'

At what points of the film was this evident and why?

Also there is a 'duality of almost everything in Kane' - can any of you give examples where this is evident?

Citizen Kane (dir. Welles, 1941)

The next film we will be looking at is Citizen Kane...what do you already know about this film?
We'll be looking at the mise-en-scene and discussing Kane's auteur presence in the film...He is a director with distinctive approach, setting him apart from standardized fare of Hollywood.
Are you familiar with the auteur theory?

Do The Right Thing (dir. Lee, 1989)

Please comment on the film...particularly on the mise-en-scene...were there any particular scenes that stood out for you? Where the mise-en-scene created meaning...communicated information to the audience...revealed aspects of character etc...

Sweet Sixteen discussion point...

There are many points throughout the narrative that show Liam looking out to sea...near the sea...How does this quote below fit in to Sweet Sixteen...

The sea, the elemental force living on its own terms, represents a freedom worth striving for by any means. Of course this is an illusion; the tides are controlled by the moon's unseen hand.
